7 Things to Keep in Mind in Taking Your Next Career Step

Career moves are always a tough experience to go through, whether you’re unhappy with your current job or simply in need of new horizons to explore, taking the next step in your career is nerve-wracking. But there are ways to make sure that you’re putting your best foot forward, allowing your potential employers to see what you’re made of.

Here are some things you need to keep in mind as you look through job openings and ponder on that next big move.

Your job is where you spend most of your time and energy on—that’s why it’s important to really think about where you want to go next. You don’t want to rush into a new role or company without making up your mind about the new environment you want for yourself.

Take a step back and think about your current situation. Make a list of things that you like and dislike about your current job, and make sure you consider them when you take the leap.

Take time to research about roles and companies. You’ll be surprised at what you can find online about your potential job and employers. If you haven’t fully decided what kind of role you want to take on next, you could take a look at your experiences and weigh what kind of opportunities are out there.

Use your network, ask around—maybe somebody could give you an idea of how it’s like to work at a certain company. Just knowing these things beforehand doesn’t only appease your mind but also prepares you for what’s coming.

Your CV is the very first thing your potential employers will get from you. Needless to say, it’s a make or break situation. Which is why it’s important to make sure that your CV has everything they need to know about you.

You might find keeping it short a bit challenging—of course, nobody wants to read a three-page document about somebody. The key is to be concise. If you can, modify your CV depending on who you’re sending it to.

Job seekers nowadays have the work cut out for them. Because of different job search sites, uploading your CV is the only step you need to take to have recruiters ringing you for interviews. Make sure to utilize these sites as much as possible. LinkedIn is also a great platform to find new opportunities but at the same time, it’s also a great avenue to engage with recruiters and professionals in your line of job.

If you are currently on the hunt, then it’s a great time to reach out to your network and the contacts you’ve gathered in the last few years. There is nothing better than connecting with your own circle when it comes to finding great opportunities.

When you land an interview, that’s one foot in the door. It’s time to bring your A-game. After all, interviews are the avenue you can use to convince them that you’re the best person for the job.

Keep in mind that interviews allow you limited time to make an impression so make sure it’s a good one. Prepare answers for standard questions, practice how you will introduce yourself, and make mental notes about the skills and achievements you want them to remember about you. If you go to interviews unprepared, it will show. So every once in a while, stand in front of the mirror and practice your speech. You’ll be surprised at how that simple action can boost your confidence.

“We will call you soon” is a thing we hear a lot in job interviews. However, there are times when they take too long to update you about your application status. The key to getting over this slump is to be the one to initiate the follow up. Following up shows your interest in the role and the company.

If you didn’t get the job offer, have the strength to ask for feedback. Ask questions about where you can improve.

Always work on improving yourself. If you find yourself getting final interviews but never the most coveted job offer, really think about the ways you can improve. Be it about presenting yourself or about the trainings and skills development activities you still need to go through—putting yourself under your own scrutiny helps you evaluate.

As you go through our job openings in our Demand Science Careers page to view opportunities in IT and Telemarketing, you also have to remember to look out for things about yourself you can work on. Practice these tips to make sure you’re ready the next time you get the chance to present yourself.

Take the Leap now!
