Questions Job Seekers Should Ask in a Job Interview

When applying for a job, the Hiring Manager or HR usually gives you the chance to ask questions after the interview. When they say “Is there anything you’d like to ask us?”, what will your response be?

One way to know if you will join them or not is to interview them back. Think of it as an opportunity to ask questions that will help you assess what you’re looking for in a company.

There are two sides of the coin- if they like you, they will hire you; but you will accept their offer only if you like them too.

1. About the company

You are required to know enough about the company before going to your interview. Google if you must, but still, the best way to learn is to get it straight from the source. Grab this chance to ask questions that you won’t easily find online.

  •  Can you tell me about the company’s mission, vision, and the values that you practice here?
  •  What are the company goals and how do you measure them?
  •  How many teams do you have and what are their responsibilities?
  •  What employee benefits do you offer?

2. About the job

Questions about the role can be customized based on your skills and qualifications. Just make sure to ask only relevant and specific questions, and try to gauge if they consider you fit for the role.

  • What will be my tasks for the first 6 months?
  • How will this role help the company hit its goals?
  • How do you see me fit for the position based on my qualifications?

3. About the culture

A few laid back questions can help lighten up the stiff mood that you may have with your interviewer. By doing so, you don’t only open the floor for the person to talk about himself/herself and the company; you may also find a common interest through the conversation.

  • Why did you decide to join this company and how’s your work experience here so far?
  • Where do you and your colleagues usually go during breaks?
  • What do you like most about working here?
  • How do you de-stress during the workday?

4. Next steps

What’s your game plan? Job hiring is a process and there are going to be next steps. You don’t have to waste time guessing and waiting for an answer. By asking these questions, you’ll know how long you have to wait or if you should wait for it at all.

  • When is the anticipated starting date for this position?
  • What is the next step in the hiring process?
  • May I know how long the deliberation takes before feedback is given to an applicant?
  • Can I follow-up on the status of my application?
