With social media, work friends to share the latest office chika with, and tons of other things you want to take a look at, it’s easy to be distracted at work. When these things pile up, they tend to pull you out of your work trance and by the time you notice it, you’ve already wasted half the day doing unnecessary things that don’t get you anywhere with your workload. Whether you’re looking for that coveted promotion or pondering on job openings, productivity is a topic often broached by employers.

It’s okay to have a little fun sometimes. After all, work-life balance is important even when you’re at the workplace. However, if these things are getting in the way of the actual work that you need to accomplish for the day, it’s probably time to take steps to be less distracted and more focused on the tasks at hand.

So, where do you start? How do you increase your productivity? How do you avoid distractions? Here are some pointers that might help.


Have a Proper Meal Before Going to Work

Whether you’re on the morning shift or the night shift, you must always start your day with a proper meal. You don’t even notice how hunger affects your mindset when going to work. It’s hard to stay focused when your stomach is grumbling. Start your day right with a meal and avoid feeling tired and queasy.


Start Your Day with a Simple Exercise

We know, we know! Who has the time, right? But hear us out. It doesn’t have to be a full-blown, gym-rat level kind of exercise. Maybe a simple round of 10 jumping jacks or a few minutes of leg stretching. It will help you get fired up and get you energized.

Limit Yourself from Using Too Much Social Media

It’s tough, we know. With the friends we need to keep up with or the funny memes we need to send to our group chats, it’s easy to see how social media can take much of our time. But really, if you count how many hours you spend just browsing through feed after feed; or watching new IG stories—you’ll realize how much work you could’ve done if you actually did some work. So, put your phone aside for a long stretch of time, focus on the work, and then you can reward yourself with a social media break after all major work has been done.


Have a To-Do List

Whether or not you’re using the old-school pen and paper or you prefer to go digital with one of those checklist apps, it’s important to keep track of your daily priorities. Find out what works for you and use that to your advantage. Decide which tasks are more urgent than the others and put that on your priority list. Once you have that list, you’ll have a better picture of what you need to accomplish for the day.


Pace Yourself

Some people are more productive at the start of their shifts, some are more effective when the day is winding down. You need to figure out which time of the day your body responds best to tough workload and schedule your hardest tasks on those hours. You’ll notice an increase in productivity when you do your toughest workload at your peak.



With a to-do list and proper pacing, the next thing you need to think about are deadlines. If you have an end-game in mind for all the tasks you have at hand, you’ll be less tempted to procrastinate. Personal deadlines are important to keep yourself in check.


Organize Your Emails

Ever tried opening your email after a day off and see all 150+ of them waiting to be read? Well, you’re not alone. Emails are a pain in the neck. That’s why it’s important to schedule checking your emails and not let it consume most of your time. After all, some of these emails dictate how your day will go. Might as well do it right.


One Task at a Time

While multitasking is a great thing, it can really slow you down when you’re not used to it. So if you know that you’re not a multitasker, you need to take one task and focus on that before you jump to the next one. When you’re answering an email in one tab and also Tweeting on the other, while reading an important announcement on another part of your screen, it can affect your productivity and you’ll end up not finishing anything at all.


Break Your Tasks Down

There are tasks that are bigger than others; some are project-size tasks that seem too much to conquer in a day. The trick is to break them down into smaller pieces. If your to-do list is comprised of big tasks that have other sub-tasks to be completed, you need to list down all those sub-tasks as well. It’ll help you gauge how much work you actually need to do to complete your big project.


Take Breaks

Lastly, and contrary to popular belief, it is very healthy to take ample breaks. Whether you work in an environment with timed breaks or you’re free to decide when you can take a break, you should go ahead and take that break. It doesn’t matter if you don’t feel like eating or chatting with your work friends, you can maybe take a walk or just stand by the office window and take the sights in. Breaks are a wonderful way to clear your head and helps you manage stress and pressure.
